The River Dell Golden Hawks Varsity Softball Team cruised past the Northern Highlands Highlanders 7-1 in the first round of the (BCWCA) Bergen County Women’s Coaches Association Tournament at River Dell High School in Oradell, New Jersey.
Northern Highlands jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning, but in the bottom half of the frame, River Dell answered back on an RBI double by third baseman Maddie Roth.
In a display of unity and collective effort, with three consecutive singles, the Golden Hawks surged ahead 4-1 in the third inning. This was thanks to a bases-loaded clearing double by right fielder Abby Bartelloni. The team’s advantage was further widened in the fourth inning to 6-1 on a two-run double by second baseman Helena Marcus. Catcher Val Visconti also contributed to the scoring output with an RBI groundout.
Golden Hawks starting pitcher Leandra Gilmartin went the distance, yielding one run on six hits and striking out six hitters. River Dell advanced to the tournament’s second round, where they will face Ridgewood on Saturday May 4th at River Dell High School.
