The Fair Lawn Cutters(6-1) rebounded from a disappointing loss to Demarest the week before with a dominating 40-13 victory over the Bergen Tech Knights at Riverside County Park in Lyndhurst, New Jersey.
Fair Lawn received the opening kickoff and moved quickly into Bergen Tech territory behind a 27-yard run by Broderik Thompson. Quarterback Ty Christianson then completed a pass to wide receiver Edward Guy that pushed the ball down to the Knights’ ten-yard line.
On third and goal at the three-yard line, Christianson took the direct snap in shotgun formation, faked the handoff, and scampered toward the left side of the line and into the end zone for the touchdown with less than nine minutes left.
After the Cutters’ defense forced a three-and-out on Bergen Tech’s first offensive possession of the game, a short punt set the Fair Lawn offense with excellent starting field position at the Knights’ 39-yard line.
Facing a second and ten at the Bergen Tech 28-yard line, Broderick Thompson took the handoff from quarterback Ty Christianson and darted and weaved through traffic. Eventually, darted down the right side of the field, Thompson bulldozed his way into the end zone for the score with three and half minutes remaining. However, the extra point attempt was no good, leaving the score at 13-0.
In the second quarter, the Cutters spread the field out with a potent aerial attack. Ty Christianson completed three consecutive passes, including a 27-yard completion to wide receiver Anthony Gentile.
With first and ten at the 11-yard line, Christianson took the snap, then dropped back in the pocket and lofted a pass into the end zone. Wide receiver Evan Cardenas, remarkably with laser-focused concentration, snagged the ball with one hand for the score that extended the Fair Lawn advantage to 20-0.
However, the Knights’ offense finally got into a rhythm as running back Re’em Avda broke free for a 30-yard run that set up first and ten at the Cutter’s 11-yard line. Avda finished the drive in style with an 11-yard touchdown run as Bergen Tech drew to within 20-7 with 3:10 to go.
Fair Lawn’s offense responded in emphatic fashion. Ty Christianson, getting the necessary pass protection, tossed a pass to Broderik Thompson, who turned on the jet burners and sprinted down to the Knights’ 13-yard line.
On third down, Christianson found his favorite target, Evan Cardenas, in the end zone. Cardenas stretched his hands to haul in the catch for the score, but the extra point attempt failed, and the score remained at 26-7.
In the third quarter, the Cutters expanded the lead further on one play as Broderick Thompson took the handoff from Ty Christianson. Thompson turned the corner, burst down the left side of the field, and muscled his way into the end zone for the electrifying 45-yard touchdown that stretched the lead to 33-7.
Fair Lawn capped off the impressive offensive output late in the third quarter as backup quarterback Shawn Pickarski scored on an eight-yard run.
