The Bergen Catholic Crusaders(5-1) won their fifth straight game, 34-0, against the Paramus Catholic Paladins(3-3) at Jack McGovern Field/Bergen Catholic High School in Oradell, New Jersey.
Bergen Catholic’s defense made an immediate impact in the first quarter. Defensive lineman Delaney Fludd recovered a fumble at the Paramus Catholic 27-yard line.
The Crusaders’ offense seized the opportunity as quarterback Dominic Campanile fired a 13-yard touchdown pass to tight end John Morris.
On Bergen Catholic’s second offensive possession, which started near midfield, the Crusaders converted a fourth down play that kept the drive alive.
Once inside the five-yard line, running back Najee Calhoun took the handoff from quarterback Dominic Campanile. Calhoun barreled straight ahead into the end zone for the three-yard score, but the extra-point attempt was no good, leaving the score at 13-0 with 2:19 remaining.
Bergen Catholic had a solid starting field position in the second quarter at the Paladins’ 36-yard line. The Crusaders relied on their running game, as Dante Kain gained first-down yardage on fourth down.
Bergen Catholic was able to advance the ball down to the four-yard line, and then Dominic Campanile lofted a pass into the left corner of the end zone, where wide receiver Quincy Porter hauled in the catch for the touchdown, extending the Crusaders’ advantage to 20-0 with 10:19 left.
After the Bergen Catholic defense forced Paramus Catholic to punt the ball away, the Crusader’s offense had plenty of room to work with near midfield.
On third and nine from the 46-yard line, Dominic Campanile completed a pass to Quincy Porter. Porter shook off several defensive players and sprinted to the end zone for the magical 54-yard touchdown, widening the lead to 27-0.
In the third quarter, the Bergen Catholic defense kept up the intensity with a relentless pass rush. This forced Paladins’ quarterback Marco Green into making an errant throw, which resulted in Crusaders defensive back Naiim Parrish swooping in for the interception and returning the ball to the Paramus Catholic five-yard line.
The Crusaders offense capitalized upon the opportunity, as running back Najee Calhoun took the handoff from quarterback Dominic Campanile and churned straightforward and untouched into the end zone for the two-yard score, which stretched the Bergen Catholic lead to 34-0 with less than seven minutes to go and capped off the scoring.
